How to Apply

Q: How is the work in the firm organized?
A: We prefer to work in a team. Each practice group is headed by one or more partners. Some practice groups also have Senior Associates who are also involved in guiding and training the younger lawyers.

Q: What is the interview like?
A: Interviews are usually conducted by either one or two partners. A candidate attending our interviews can expect a semi formal setting. You will be expected to attend two rounds of interviews.

Q: How much training can I expect?
A: Young lawyers’ work is closely supervised and checked before the work product is released to the client. On a more formal basis, the firm also conducts an in-house continuing legal education programme on various aspects of practice and the law. Speakers for the programme have either been partners and associates in the firm or relevant outsiders.

Q: As a young lawyer, will I be given the opportunity to conduct hearings on my own for litigation matters?
A: Generally our young lawyers are encouraged to attend Court and argue cases although the more complex matters are conducted by the partners. However, junior lawyers are afforded the opportunity to assist Lead Counsel in high profile disputes.

Q: Will I be working from a room or a work station?
A: At present, lawyers in the firm enjoy the privacy of their own rooms [there are no glass walls here!]

Q: Does the firm fund their lawyers to attend seminars and conferences?
A: Usually a partner will identify a suitable seminar or conference and encourage his associates to attend. The firm will usually in these circumstances sponsor the attendance fee for the associates.

Q: When should I apply for pupillage?
A: We take in pupils all year round although it would be a good idea for students in the final year of study or students s itting for the CLP or Bar exam to apply even before your final results come out.

Q: How many pupils does the firm take in a year?
A: On average, we take about 10 -12 pupils at any one time.

Q: Does the firm discriminate between local graduates and foreign graduates?
A: Absolutely not. We do however expect a good command of the English language and strong credentials, whatever your background.

Q: What is the interview like?
A: Pupillage interviews are conducted by a partner of the firm. We prefer to make the experience fairly informal so that you are at ease and we get an opportun ity to know you better.

Q: Do I need to bring anything for the interview?
A: Apart from your application and resume there is no need to bring any of your formal papers to the interview.

Q: Do I need to read up on the law prior to the interview?
A: We won’t lie, the interview process is designed to assess your legal mind and your personal ity. Inev itably, questions about the law will crop up although we promise not to raise any area of the law that you have not learnt. You would also be well advised to update yourself on the current developments in the Malaysian legal scene

Q: What is the firm’s retention rate?
A: We recru it pupils w ith the aim of retention. As a matter of policy, we look to our pupils first to fill su itable vacancies. For the past few years, our retention rates have been fairly high.

Q: What does the firm expect from their pupils?
A: An enthusiasm to learn and an unwavering comm itment to any task given will put you in good stead. At the end of the day, you will be assessed on your mer its.

Q: How much allowance will I get?
A: This is certainly the hot favour ite amongst all FAQs! In add ition to your monthly allowance, the firm will pay for all fees and charges associated w ith the filing of your call papers. As for the allowance itself, rest assured, our allowance is comparable to other big to medium sized firms.
